Christmas – Between tradition and festivites
What does it look like Christmas in Malta ? Just because it is 15 degrees outside and there is no snow does not mean that there is no Christmas spirit!
If you are in Malta already, you will have noticed the busy Christmas decorations and the lights that decorate the streets. Soon, the Christmas markets will start to pop up in various locations too!
Malta, which is for the most part Catholic, attaches great importance to this very special day of the year. This is evident in the many Nativity cribs that are built in front of churches or that are placed on the window sills of houses, mainly in the villages.
As your event agency in Malta, 3sixtymeetings would like to introduce you to some of the different traditions and festivities which are popular around Christmas.
Festivities or Traditions ?
Valletta, first of all, does not skimp on the celebrations. Aside from the festive decorations throughout the capital, a special mass is organised in the Cathedral of St John, which is highly appreciated during this time of year. Of course, there are many others throughout the capital, but this one is particularly beautiful and symbolic, and the surroundings are second to none.

But beyond these festivities there are also purely Maltese traditions. For example, four weeks before Christmas, families plant millet seeds (an herbaceous plant that looks a little like wheat) that they let grow in the dark to keep them white. These are then placed beside the Nativity crib.
Christmas lunch is another important family tradition. Roast turkey is the highlight of the Christmas menu, with signature roast Maltese potatoes and various vegetable dishes. This is customarily followed by the traditional Christmas cake. Other sweets and delicacies with honey or sesame are also popular, usually by the time the coffee is served.
